Club night ·
Every seat at the table.
Club night now works from a keyboard and a screen reader, start to finish, and the lobby says so plainly when your phone loses the room. On Chrome, Edge and Android, Castle Gambit also installs like an app.
Board
You’re White
vs someone new
The short version
- From the code to “I won” by keyboard alone: Tab, Enter and Space
- Your pairing is read out the moment it lands: Board, colour and opponent, with focus on it unless you were busy elsewhere
- Tournament byes, and boards still on their way, are read out when they arrive
- Lost signal? The lobby holds “Find me a game” and marks your game as the last it heard
- Organizers: enter results board after board by keyboard, without losing your place
- Install it from Chrome, Edge or Android, and it opens on Type the code
A club night is for everyone who sits down at a board, including the player who runs their phone with a keyboard or a screen reader. So we went through the whole evening that way, from typing the code to reporting the result, and fixed every place it tripped.
The whole night, without a tap
Join, skip the starting level, and press Space on Find me a game. When your pairing lands, it says it: “Board 4. You’re White. Opponent: Dana L.” If you were on the button it replaced, or on your last game’s slip waiting for the next round, focus moves to it too; if you’d gone off to read who’s here, you keep your place. Then “How did it go?”, your copy, and “Change my answer” if you need it, each landing where you’d look next. When your opponent’s copy is in, you hear that too, and your rating is read out once it’s worked out. Tournament nights say the bye, or a game waiting for a free board, the moment it’s yours.
Honest about the signal
Church-hall wifi has opinions. When your phone loses the room, the lobby stops pretending: “Find me a game” waits (“Waiting for the connection…”), and your game goes grey under “Checking the room…”, because a pairing from five minutes ago may not be tonight’s anymore. The moment you’re back, it’s the room as it is now.
For organizers
“Needs you” and the games page work by keyboard, and every settle button says which board it settles. Enter a result or void a game and focus moves on to the next game in the same list, the one you’d do next, without the page jumping; you hear where the finished one went. When that list is done, focus goes with the last game to its new home. “Pair everyone” tells you why it’s waiting when fewer than two people are.
On your home screen
In Chrome, Edge and on Android, “Install app” in the browser’s menu puts Castle Gambit on your home screen or desktop. It opens on Type the code, ready for the next club night.
