How the Climb works

Five places to play, from the kitchen table to the tournament hall. Each has a board with eight pawns, one for each kind of puzzle: checkmates, forks, pins and skewers, discoveries, sacrifices, loose pieces, quiet moves and endgames.

Pick any pawn, in any order. Solve five of its puzzles and it steps up a square. A miss doesn’t count against you; five clean in a row, no hints, and the square fills in canary.

From its first square a pawn may go two at once, as a first move can: clear the fourth and the third counts as passed.

Get a pawn to the far side and it becomes the piece you pick. The first one on a board opens the next place. Once your puzzle rating settles high enough, the places that match it open on their own.
