Your Club card ·

Your pawn made it. Choose your piece.

When your crowns walk a pawn to the 8th rank, you now choose what it becomes: a queen, a rook, a bishop or a knight. It sits on your Club card, and on your profile if you show your card.

The short version

  • Reach the 8th rank and choose a queen, a rook, a bishop or a knight
  • Underpromotion is allowed, and a knight is as proud as a queen
  • Every promotion adds a piece: a small row of them, in order
  • Change your mind any time, on your Club card or in Settings

It takes a good few club nights to walk a pawn from the 2nd rank to the 8th. Until now, getting there meant a number going up by one. Now it means a decision, which is how chess has always done it.

Pick the piece

When your pawn reaches the 8th rank, your Club card asks what it becomes: a queen, a rook, a bishop or a knight. Underpromotion is allowed, and nobody here will tell you the queen was the right answer: the most famous promotion in chess, the Saavedra position, is to a rook. You’ll see the invitation on your Club card, on Home, and on the card after the game that got you there.

A row of them

Each promotion adds its own piece, so a long-time regular ends up with a little row: the first promotion first. Changed your mind? Tap a piece on your Club card, or go to Settings, under Privacy, and pick again. If a result is ever corrected and takes a promotion back, its piece comes off too, and your card tells you so.

Who sees them

You always do. Other people see your pieces only on your profile page, and only while your Club card is shown there (the same switch as your level and stamps). Until you choose, nobody else sees a piece at all: we don’t pick a queen for you. Never on the club TV, never in the lobby, never next to anyone else’s, and still no leaderboards.
