The club TV has more to say

The screen on the wall looks more like the pairing sheet it's based on. It keeps the time in the corner, and a line along the bottom tells the room who's waiting, what's next and how the night works, one thing at a time.

The far tables of a pub’s back room under brass lamps: games in progress, a pint and a cola beside the boards.

The short version

  • Tonight's event, its rules and the time, on one line at the top
  • Every board on its own ruled line, easier to follow from across the room
  • A line along the bottom: who's waiting, games so far tonight, your next night, a tip or two
  • When the night ends, the screen shows your next one, with a code to your Castle's page
  • For organizers: Pause is in the screen settings now, or press P

The club TV has always been the pairing sheet taped to the wall: big board numbers, big names, readable from the back row. It still is. It just looks the part now.

Tonight’s event, its rules and the time share one line at the top, so the boards start higher up the screen. Each board sits on its own ruled line, like the printed sheet, so it’s easy to follow Board 4 across to who you’re playing. The join code and its QR code sit on their own card.

A line along the bottom

Along the bottom, one line at a time, the screen says who’s waiting for a game, how many games you’ve played so far tonight, when your Castle meets next, and a reminder or two (both of you tap the result, and Take a break is there when you need one). It turns to the next line every few seconds. It never scrolls sideways, because the people closest to the screen are in the middle of a game.

Before the first game and after the last

Before anyone’s paired, the screen walks newcomers through it in three steps: scan the code, tap Find me a game, find your board number. On a tournament night it’s check in, then watch the screen for pairings. When you close the night, it says how many games you played and shows your next night with a code that opens your Castle’s page, so people can find the next one on their way out.

For whoever runs the TV

Pause has moved off the pairing sheet into the screen settings, which open when you press any key or move the mouse. You can also just press P. Still no ratings on the wall, ever: names and board numbers only.
