A bigger 3D board, with the carving showing
The 3D board now takes up the room it's given, the pieces show their carving, and taken pieces go behind the board instead of crowding the side.

The short version
- On a laptop the 3D board fills its space, instead of sitting small in the middle of it
- Collars, crowns, the bishop's notch and the knight's mane show on every piece, and the black set gets a little rim light
- Taken pieces lie behind the board, on your opponent's side; on a phone they leave the board altogether
- On Today's puzzle, the date, how you did and Share now sit right under the board
If you play puzzles or the opening trainer on the 3D board, you may have noticed it sitting politely in the middle of a lot of empty table. It was keeping room beside it for pieces nobody had taken yet. Now the board takes the space, and makes room behind it only once there’s something to put down: in puzzles you’ll barely notice, and in the opening trainer it steps back a bit.
The pieces show their carving too: the rings round a pawn’s collar, the rook’s battlements, the slit in the bishop’s mitre, the knight’s mane. It’s the difference between a queen and “the tall one”. The black pieces also catch a little light round their edges, so a black king on a dark square is still a king.
Taken pieces now lie on the table behind the board, on your opponent’s side, the way a tidy opponent leaves them. On a phone, where every bit of screen goes to the squares, they leave the board and stay out of the way. To try it in puzzles, open the menu by the mode’s name, pick Settings, and choose 3D under Board (where your device can run it).
One more thing on Today’s puzzle: the date, how your go went and Share now sit right under the board, where your eyes already are when you’ve finished.
