Pick 2D or 3D first, and see your pieces better

Puzzle settings live behind one ⚙ at the end of the mode tabs now. Choose 2D or 3D, then only the looks that board can wear. The 3D set is easier to read, and the piece you're about to move gets an outline.

A café table close up: a hand moving a piece on a wooden board beside a chess clock and a mug of coffee.

The short version

  • One ⚙ at the end of Climb, Today, Scramble and Practice opens Board and puzzles
  • 2D or 3D first, then only the choices that change that board
  • Sound and Type a move are in there too, so the bottom of the page is just your puzzles
  • A clearer 3D set: paler white, deeper black, a fine line round every piece
  • Hover over a piece you can move, or pick it up, and it's outlined and its square framed

The settings were scattered: a ⚙ next to Hint, a card at the bottom of the page, and a few choices that did nothing to the board you were actually playing on. Now there’s one ⚙, at the end of the mode tabs, and everything is behind it.

2D or 3D, then the rest

Tap the ⚙ and the first choice is the board: 2D, the printed one, or 3D, the club table. Then you only see what that board can wear. On 2D that’s the pieces (Classic or Outline) and the colors (Paper, Tournament vinyl, High contrast). On 3D the pieces are carved, so it’s the table: the club table, the roll-up mat with its plastic set, or high contrast. Sound and Type a move are underneath, where they used to be at the foot of the page. Scramble still plays on 2D. The clock waits for nobody.

Pieces you can actually see

The 3D set was handsome and a little shy. The white pieces are paler now, the black ones deeper, and every piece has a fine line round it, so a black king on a dark square no longer disappears into the wood. Hover over a piece you can move and it gets an outline. Pick it up or drag it and the outline doubles, in ballpoint and canary, and the square you’re over gets a frame. The flat board does the same.
