Check

When the king is attacked, everything else waits. There are only three ways out. You'll be able to: get out of check by moving, blocking or capturing.

Arrow keys move between squares; up is towards your opponent. Enter or Space picks a piece up and puts it down. Escape puts it back.

When a piece attacks the king, the king is in check. Here Black's rook on e8 is checking White's king on e1, straight down the e-file.
