Caro–Kann Defence
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 · B10–B19
Against 1.e4 you play …c6 and …d5, challenging the centre with a pawn that has another right behind it, and your light-squared bishop usually gets out before …e6 can shut it in. It's for players who'd rather have a sound position than a wild one: White often gets more space, and you get very few weaknesses and endgames you're happy to reach.
Three ideas to hold on to
- 1. Challenge the centre with …d5, backed up by the pawn on c6.
- 2. Get the light-squared bishop out before …e6 shuts it in.
- 3. When White takes space, hit back at d4 with …c5.
