Knocked out? There's still a game

Once a tournament is over for you, your phone asks if you want a casual game and pairs you with the others who are out. And a club can keep the room's list of who's here off players' phones on tournament nights.

A bright community hall with rows of chess boards, clocks and numbered table tents.

The short version

  • Out of a knockout, finished, or withdrawn mid-tournament: "Want a casual game?"
  • Find me a game pairs you with the others who are out, on the boards the tournament isn't using
  • Only people who are out: anyone still due to play a round, or a playoff, stays free for it
  • Clubs can show phones only the tournament on tournament nights, on House rules

Losing in round one of a knockout used to mean a long evening of watching. Now, once the tournament is over for you, your phone says so kindly and asks: Want a casual game? Tap Find me a game and you’re paired with someone else who’s out, on a board the tournament isn’t using, under the club’s usual casual rules. That works even on a night with no side games. Anyone still due to play a round or a playoff for first stays out of the casual queue, so the tournament gets them when it needs them.

Organizers get one more box under House rules: Show who’s here on tournament nights. It’s on unless you switch it off. Off, on a tournament night with no side games, players’ phones show the tournament and their board, not the whole room. You and your TDs still see everyone. It’s what phones show, not a lock: Report someone still lists everyone in the room.
