What’s new

Your Club card ·

Play a game, earn a crown.

Every game you play at club night now earns crowns, and showing up earns stamps. Crowns walk your pawn up the board toward promotion, on a Club card only you can see.

The short version

  • 50 crowns for every game that counts, 100 for a draw, 150 for a win
  • Your pawn walks up the board; the 8th rank means promotion
  • Stamps for showing up: three nights at one Castle makes you a Regular
  • Free for players, and staying that way

Club chess has always kept score two ways: the result on the sheet, and the fact that you came back next Tuesday. Your rating takes care of the first. Now there’s something for the second.

Crowns, for playing

Every game that counts earns crowns: 50 for sitting down, 100 for a draw, 150 for a win. They land when you both agree on the result (or the organizer settles it), and if a result is ever corrected, the crowns are too. Your rating says how you play; crowns say how much you play. The two never touch.

Your pawn, on its way up

Crowns walk your pawn up the board, one rank at a time. Reach the 8th rank and it’s promoted, and the next pawn sets off. It takes a good few club nights. That’s rather the point.

Stamps, for showing up

Your first game gets a stamp, and so does your first win. Three club nights at the same Castle makes you a Regular; ten makes you a Fixture. Club nights at three different Castles puts you On tour, and organizers get one for opening the doors.

A card in your pocket

It’s all on your Club card, on your own page and on Home, and after each game you’ll see what it earned you. Only you can see it: no leaderboards, no streaks to keep, nothing on the club TV. Crowns can’t be bought and don’t cash out.

And while we’re here: Castle Gambit is free for players, and it’s staying that way. More in Questions.
